I’m looking forward to playing some creative improvisational world fusion music with Derek Wright this week!
Thursday: Concert in Denver with special guest dancers
Friday: House concert in Boulder
Derek Wright‘s music (www.derekwrightmusic.com) expresses a wide range of influences and reflects his diverse upbringing and training. Growing up in New Orleans playing jazz bass, falling in love with and studying music and dance from the Middle East, North Africa and Central Asia, intensely studying North Indian classical music for 10 years at the Ali Akbar College of Music (www.aacm.org), learning, playing and teaching Brazilian music for nearly 20 years, and accompanying numerous dance performances and classes, have all shaped Derek’s sound and style. Quiet, contemplative improvisations transform into complex and driving rhythms. Beautiful and soulful melodies on the oud or saz (stringed instruments from the Middle East) fly over powerful drums from Pernambuco, Brazil. Come on a unique journey to explore a vast landscape of feelings, dynamics, energies and sounds. Derek will be joined by on pandeiro, congas, cajon, and multi-percussion by Boulder-based multi-percussion wizard Carl Dixon, percussionist of Ginga and musical director of the Boulder Samba School and Batería Alegría. The two met and established their musical and improvisational connection as dance accompanists at California Brazil Camp.
