Caixa em Cima Lesson

This lesson is an overview of my technique for playing samba on caixa em cima (caixa above, played holding the drum). It includes some exercises to develop good sound and rhythm in both hands and get started playing the most common samba rhythm for caixa em cima, as played by Salgueiro, Tijuca, Beija Flor, Grande Rio, Estacio, and many other samba schools in Rio.

I learned a lot about this technique and rhythm from Mestre Marcão of Salgueiro. Watch him play caixa here: http://youtu.be/uWjIYJilUNM

California Brazil Camp 2018

I’m so excited and honored to be teaching a Beginning Bateria class at the 2018 California Brazil Camp.

Session Two, August 26-September 1

Beginning Bateria class description:

Carl’s Beginning Bateria class will focus on the instruments of the samba schools of Rio, including surdo, caixa, repique, tamborim, agogô, chocalho, and others. Material covered will include common samba rhythms and breaks played in samba school baterias and other Brazilian rhythms played by blocos. Techniques for each instrument will be demonstrated and practiced, with a focus on developing skills for long term improvement.
This class will be great for percussionists of all levels interested in playing Brazilian percussion in a group, learning traditional rhythms, and developing percussion technique. No previous experience necessary.

Concerts with Derek Wright May 7-8

I’m looking forward to playing some creative improvisational  world fusion music with Derek Wright this week!

Thursday: Concert in Denver with special guest dancers

Friday: House concert in Boulder

Derek Wright‘s music (www.derekwrightmusic.com) expresses a wide range of influences and reflects his diverse upbringing and training. Growing up in New Orleans playing jazz bass, falling in love with and studying music and dance from the Middle East, North Africa and Central Asia, intensely studying North Indian classical music for 10 years at the Ali Akbar College of Music (www.aacm.org), learning, playing and teaching Brazilian music for nearly 20 years, and accompanying numerous dance performances and classes, have all shaped Derek’s sound and style. Quiet, contemplative improvisations transform into complex and driving rhythms. Beautiful and soulful melodies on the oud or saz (stringed instruments from the Middle East) fly over powerful drums from Pernambuco, Brazil. Come on a unique journey to explore a vast landscape of feelings, dynamics, energies and sounds. Derek will be joined by on pandeiro, congas, cajon, and multi-percussion by Boulder-based multi-percussion wizard Carl Dixon, percussionist of Ginga and musical director of the Boulder Samba School and Batería Alegría. The two met and established their musical and improvisational connection as dance accompanists at California Brazil Camp.
